#1 Killer of Teenagers: Cars

resized_510x445_Brewster.jpg

Ok, well, it's not exactly a "killer" per se, but it makes good press. In the United States though, when you think of all of the things that could be big time "killers", including drugs and alcohol, and still car crashes rank as the number one mortality issue for teenagers, it is a literal sobering fact. As technologies zoom past us and things such as text messaging, iPods, and cell phones continue to become more complex and more utilized, it means more distractions for these trendy items, and therefore it increases the number of car crashes and, unfortunately, the deaths of teens.

It really does re-raise a question that has been asked for quite some time--is the partial problem that the laws for teen drivers are not strict enough, including the driving age? I mean, the law says you can't be less than 21 years old to swig a beer, 18 to vote for a president, but 16 to operate a vehicle that goes up to 100 mph and costs upwards of 50% of what a decent house could be?

It really is quite hard to fathom when I look back, that at 16 I was really ready to drive responsibly. However, until there is more in-depth education and stricter laws for not only the age, but things like for the techy items I listed above, unfortunately this number won't change, and will quite likely keep going up. We've done so much for car safety, but you can't take out the X factor: us.
