2008 Ford Escape: Same Escape with Updated Look, Trimmings

ford_escape08.jpgWith so much of the recent Ford talk focused on their ongoing financial woes, bright spots in their product lineup like the Ford Escape can get lost in the shuffle. The Ford Escape continues to sell very well in Canada entrenched behind the Honda CR-V as the best selling mid-sized SUV in the country.

The Ford Escape clearly has dialed up a winning blend of value, space and features that has resonated well in the Canadian market since its introduction in 2001. As such, Ford's motto heading into the 2008 model year for the Escape is 'refine not redefine'. The guts of the Escape are virtually the same as 2007, therefore the 2008 Escape can best be described as an 'update', and not a full 'makeover' despite major exterior and interior changes. The interior is virtually unrecognizable from its previous years, an update that includes new dash and instrumentation in addition to new seats. The exterior of the Escape gets most noticeably a new front face that now brings the Escape more in-line with the current nose of the F-150. Overall, it's more luxurious on the inside, and tougher on the outside.

The Ford Escape Hybrid continues to pioneer in the SUV market and remains one of the lone 'true' hybrids on the market that can run on 100% battery power, albeit at speeds under 40 kmh. In addition to true electric power, the Escape Hybrid also boasts an interior that comes clad in InterfaceFABRIC which is made of 100% post-industrial materials, believed to be a first in the North American auto sector. Some nice feathers in Ford's green cap.

Ford knows it has a good thing going with the Escape, hence the update as opposed to complete redesign. Increased competition in this market segment will keep Ford on its toes, but the Escape looks dressed up for continued success in 2008.
