Are auto sales on the upswing or is this just a mirage?

Mirages are just awful things. Awful. I mean, consider that when you are out in a desert and you are dying of thirst, and your mind plays a bit of a trick on you as you think you see a vision of something cool and refreshing, only to have it disappear from your mind as you draw nearer to reality. Well, the same thing can be said of the auto industry which may be seeing a mirage with the August car sales numbers up from July.

Yes, they were down from last year--a lot. But any good news is wonderful for the auto industry that has faced a mountain of issues for almost all of 2008. Is it really GOOD news though to count on? I think that for the spin doctors, you betcha. But with GM taking the biggest leap in terms of sales largely due to the employee pricing promotion that they have extended now with more 2009 models, is the car sale jump in terms of numbers really gaining a profit? I mean, let's be honest--there's a reason why August sales normally do well as dealers try to rid inventory, and with the steep discounts on top of that, the numbers are in fact that--a mirage.

There still has not been anything in terms of a short-term solution other than basically robbing Peter to pay Paul--and with even globally other auto makers are making dismal quotes about the end of 2008 and beginning of 2009, this is not something to get excited about.

By the way, the picture you see is of the highest selling car in the United States for August--yes, a Chevy Silverado. Will we ever learn???
