GM: NO OT ASAP

GM General Motors.jpg

Citing the fact that General Motors is trying desperately to cut costs in every way possible, it announced that there will be no more unscheduled overtime at its two biggest selling car plants in Orion Township, Mich., which makes the Chevrolet Malibu and Pontiac G6 midsize cars, and Lordstown, Ohio, where GM makes the Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5.

Unscheduled overtime works normally when someone calls in sick, and in order to keep the production going, another worker will work half of another shift while the third shift worker will come in for a half shift earlier. GM is burning through about $1 billion in cash per month and has promised to raise $10 billion through cost cuts and another $5 billion through asset sales and borrowing as it tries to outlast a U.S. auto sales slump that could run into 2010.(Source AP)

I understand the total need to basically cut where ever, but this is at their biggest selling plants, where the cars in production are still doing actually decent, so why are you cutting off your nose to spite your face? It doesn't make a lot of sense, but this should give clear evidence of the panic and almost miser-like proportions this has gotten to. I can't see where this ultimately benefits anyone.
