GM to add 350K to V6 Production

2009_chevrolet_traverse_press_image_main.jpg

While so many plans for car makers are to go small, including SUV production, the idea that developing engines that are regarded as "bigger" has not been really the path that anyone wants to venture down or invest in. So when General Motors announced that they were going to add 350,000 vehicles to their V6 production in their Mexico plant, I am sure the first thought for most people--including myself--was, "Really??"

But the difference is that the engine, called the HFV6, which will actually give the best of both worlds, adding power (6 percent) and decreasing fuel consumption (7 percent) with the engine overall. The upcoming Chevrolet Traverse (pictured) will use a version of the engine. GM also said that the plant will produce 6-speed front-wheel-drive transmissions for the Saturn Vue, Chevrolet Equinox and the Chevrolet Malibu.

This is a great "green" move again towards making things better for the consumer and for the environment. While a lot of people will still criticize the big three for the "too little too late" with this and still trailing the Japanese car makers, it doesn't hurt.
