Honda, Nissan exploring carbon fiber use

Let's face it...the cost of steel and parts for cars continues to rise, and that means that once unthinkable things that cost too much previously are now in the "potential" category for car production. For carbon fiber, which had not been developed in this manner, this was the thinking previously. But now Nissan and Honda are in the midst of researching its use for possible use with its cars.

The benefits of carbon fiber are great--it allows cars to be lighter, which obviously is great for gas mileage, it is recyclable, which is huge for the car makers, and it actually is better for the environment with fewer emissions. This is certainly a win-win-win situation if they can make it work, and the level of seriousness that they are putting into the consideration is evident as they are working with carbon fiber company Toray, and Mitsubishi Rayon -- a Japanese version of DuPont -- to research new, less expensive carbon fiber for cars.

This type of breakthrough would be huge if things continue to go the way they do in terms of the normal things (steel) that are rising in cost that compare to the cost for carbon fiber production, which some day could be along the same lines. Stay tuned.
