Is Hyundai's interest in Chrysler legit?

hyundai_ceo_chrysler.jpg

I know that the rumor mill in the automotive industry is about as hot as the celebrity gossip sites that run rampant on the web, (alright that is stretching it a little bit), but with the flurry of all of who-is-with-who in the car making business, when I am seeing all of this happening, my fickleness of all of these reports is growing by the minute.

So when I read about Hyundai's interest in purchasing Chrysler, I have to wonder--is this just a shot across the bow? Is it something that even would be looked at seriously? Insiders say that talks have taken place between Chrysler and Cerberus about a potential acquisition of the Jeep brand and other possible assets.

I don't know--if Nissan-Renault, which already has a stake in the company, has failed in discussions, what basis would one think that Hyundai could march right in and make a bid? My thought is that there is already a bunch of tension surrounding the possible GM-Chrysler merger, so bringing in a foreign buyer out of the blue is just not something that I think is feasible. At a minimum, with the change in leadership of Barack Obama, I believe that there will be a "wait and see" approach at least for a while. If nothing improves, then I may consider this a legitimate "thought".
