NHTSA could demand 50MPG standard by 2030

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been quite the thorn in the auto makers of the world's side, and especially in the Big Three with their standards of gas economy and what not. With aggressive goals that the NHTSA says will cost the industry almost 47 billion--yes, that's right--by 2015, the newest thing is that the organization could demand 50 MPG as the minimum standard by 2030.

Yes, that may seem like a ways off--but it really is only about 21 years ago, and with the standard looking to go beyond 35 MPG by 2020, car companies are having to scramble to be thinking long-term in planning for their models and for those that are way under the radar as to what they can do, with alternative fuel methods, etc., or just scrapping the models altogether.

While the auto makers have publicly voiced their dismay with these types of demands, it's a definite plus for consumers, it would seem. But is it? Obviously the costs will have to be passed on in some way, and that means probably in some way, shape or form to Mr. Joe Consumer...you and me....
