Online Scam duping buyers out of thousands

Although internet security and fraud is something that always seems to be rampant, those of us that have been around for quite some time in the internet world know that it's a lot better than it used to be. Now, at least, sites offer secure transactions and even protection in some deals that are made via trades and auctions. But there seems to always be another way that scammers come up with something else to gouge more money out of hapless consumers.

In this instance, con artists are copying online car classified ads and offering them for much cheaper than what the original seller is posting for, and when they make the deal with the unsuspecting person, they ask for deposits for these sight-unseen vehicles. Of course, you know the rest of the story--they never get the car, the money vanishes, and the person is out hundreds, sometimes even thousands.

I guess I kind of blame both parties for these situations--if you aren't suspicious enough or careful with things, then it's kind of your own fault for being taken. Now, on the other hand, I realize that these scammers are smooth talkers and if given the chance, I would probably be talked into anything :), but the fact is that we need to all be aware that fraud never sleeps. (Why, I never made the connection, Mr. Obvious!)
