Toyota scared about Detroit's Big Three

toyota_camry_main02_1.jpg

What a headline! It provokes all kinds of things, right? That the behemoth car company Toyota is scared about the American Automakers stealing its thunder and number 1 slot, right? RIGHT? Well, no...not quite. Actually, it's quite the opposite. Toyota posted its first profit decline in nine years, and with the ways it is losing money at every turn--though not at the pace the Big Three are--the concern is that with their potentially impending doom, it's actually WORSE for Toyota when this happens.

Why? Well, consider that global car manufacturers have mutual connections in terms of vendors and suppliers, and if there were dramatic scenarios with even one of the American car companies in terms of bankruptcy or continued drops in financials, this would be bad for Toyota--because even when discussing with a Toyota exec, they noted that competition is key to their growth, and that when the American car makers do well, it in turn benefits everyone.

This makes sense, in a weird way...In most businesses, the idea is that they drive out competition so that they can have market share, and to see the polesitter saying that they need to have the others doing well so they can continue to do well, it just doesn't register on this capitalist's brain, but in the whole scheme of things, I can see that the industry as a whole needs to do well or else no one does well--well, at least the major ones seem to fall under the same umbrella.
